Course Overview

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a significant civil rights law enacted in 1990. It prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in various areas of public life, including employment, public services, public accommodations, transportation and telecommunications. Several key federal acts complement and relate to the ADA, including the Rehabilitation Act, ADA Amendments Act, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), ensuring protection, accessibility, and equal opportunities for people with disabilities.

Certain mental health conditions are safeguarded under the ADA, provided they satisfy the legal criteria for disability. Addiction qualifies as a protected condition and is entitled to specific rights under ADA regulations. Among these rights are workplace accommodations for employees with disabilities, with several examples outlined and additional resources available for further reference.

This course provides an overview of the ADA and its application to mental health conditions, opioid addiction, and treatment. It further examines workplace accommodations available to support individuals with these conditions.
