Course Overview

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a significant civil rights law enacted in 1990. It prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in various areas of public life, including employment, public services, public accommodations, transportation and telecommunications. Several key federal acts complement and relate to the ADA, including the Rehabilitation Act, ADA Amendments Act, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), ensuring protection, accessibility, and equal opportunities for people with disabilities.

The enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) involves several federal agencies, depending on which title of the ADA is applicable. For example, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces Title I related to employment, while the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) handles enforcement for Titles II and III, which cover state and local government services and public accommodations, respectively.

This class presents the ADA law as well as the acts that work with the ADA law to ensure no discrimination for people with disabilities. As with all federal laws, there is controversy regarding the baby boomers who are reaching old age and presenting to the medical establishment with disabilities that may be covered under the ADA law.
