Models of Disability and Advocacy in Rehabilitation Counseling

A. Models of Disability

This article reviews the three major models of disability:

1. Biomedical model,
2. Economic model
3. Sociopolitical model.

First, the purposes and consequences of these models are presented, then comparisons are offered and conclusions drawn. 
 

B. Advocacy in Rehab Counseling (includes 2 hours Ethics credit for CRC and CDMS)

The focus of this section is to enhance the discussion about advocacy in rehabilitation counseling by attending to the contribution of multicultural counseling perspectives.

To meet this goal, we first discuss the relevance of incorporating multicultural competency into the definition of advocacy in rehabilitation counseling.

Second, we discuss the issue of politicizing the profession through advocacy activities, and we describe various models and definitions of advocacy.

Finally, we discuss training and practice implications with particular attention to the professional responsibilities of rehabilitation counselors and the challenges that they face as they attempt to advocate for their clientele.
