Aging with a Spinal Cord Injury

This course will lead the student through a discussion on aging with spinal cord injury. We first focus on a general introduction to spinal cord injury, broadly. Then we will discuss the aging process and what challenges lie ahead for those aging with a spinal cord injury. Different technologies will then be introduced as we continue the conversation to the issue of mobility and the variety of assistant devices available to those with spinal cord injury.

Course Overview

This course will lead the student through a discussion on aging with spinal cord injury. We first focus on a general introduction to spinal cord injury, broadly. Then we will discuss the aging process and what challenges lie ahead for those aging with a spinal cord injury. Different technologies will then be introduced as we continue the conversation to the issue of mobility and the variety of assistant devices available to those with spinal cord injury.

We will then pivot the conversation to discuss the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it pertains to those with spinal cord injury. We will present the protections under the ADA covering those reentering the workforce. There is a myriad of approved accommodations in the workplace that can make life easier and more productive for people with SCI.

Finally, for those working with veterans, we highlight multiple programs available through the VA for those with a SCI. We will touch on programs for medical care and rehab, caregivers of veterans, and home improvements. There is also health library with fact sheets and guides for veterans who have spinal cord injury.

Course Objectives

  1. Describe the bodily changes in aging and how they affect those with an SCI.
  2. List the benefits and burdens of both power and regular wheelchairs and the importance of the type of wheelchair needed.
  3. Discuss how the ADA protects those with an SCI.
  4. List several workplace accommodations that are approved for people with an SCI.
  5. Detail what programs are available for veterans with an SCI and new research on an SCI including COVID-19 effects on those with spinal cord injury.
