Course Overview

The first three chapters present the reason for this protocol, the need for knowledge of substance use disorder as it relates to those with other co-occurring disorders, and the proper screening and assessment of these patients. The course explains the guiding principles in dealing with such patients and the principals of treatment, assessments, and healthcare providers competencies. Included are the protocol for proper screening and assessment of this patient population. There is also a multiple step assessment tool for the healthcare professional.

Course Objectives

  1. Discuss the prevalence and needs of patients with COD's.
  2. Present the difficulty involving SUDs, Mental Illness, and "Self-Medicating".
  3. List the guiding principals involved in the proper assessment, treatment and management of such patients.
  4. Discuss the principals pertaining to the healthcare administration and competencies needed to effectively deal with patients with COD's.
  5. Explain the multiple steps needed for correct assessment of these patients.
