Course Overview

This Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Advisory outlines how healthcare providers can take an active role in supporting the health of pregnant people who have opioid use disorder (OUD) as well as their babies. This course offers healthcare providers an opportunity to end the opioid crisis and with help, more pregnant people can learn about their options for treatment and recovery for better health outcomes.

Course Objectives

1. Recognize the need for providers to prioritize health equity for underserved pregnant people with OUD in critical requirements of culturally responsive and empathetic care.


2. Identify the needs of the pregnant person using "whole-patient" care approaches such as assessment and treatment plans for co-occurring mental disorders in pregnant patients with OUD.


3. Educate other healthcare professionals and pregnant people about options for treatment, filling the treatment gap, and the benefits of recovery.


4. Optimize a better health outcomes approach by offering universal prenatal SUD screening, prescribing pharmacological treatment if appropriate, and connecting pregnant people with other harm reduction services.
