Course Overview

This course is the Treatment Improvement Protocol 59: Improving Cultural Competence which focuses on the essential ingredients for developing cultural competence as a counselor and for providing culturally responsive services in clinical settings as an organization.

This is part one (of 4) and the test will be on chapters 1, 2, and 3 where we will define cultural competence, present a rationale for pursuing it, and describe the process of becoming responsive to client needs. It also addresses development of cultural awareness and provides guidelines for culturally responsive clinical services, including interviewing skills, assessment practices, and treatment planning.

Course Objectives

  1. Why cultural competence is important and outlining a path of how it is achieved.

  2. Defining culture, race, ethnicity and what the crosscutting factor are between each of them.

  3. Identifying the appropriate core counselor competencies and following a framework of self-assessment for cultural competence.

  4. Learning to endorse collaboration with clients in interviews, assessments, and treatment planning, along with engaging the families with treatment and the evaluation process.
